Car brakes are also called braking.

Braking can be simply understood as stopping rotation. It refers to the action of stopping or slowing down the speed of moving locomotives, vehicles, and other transportation tools or machinery.

In cars, braking mainly involves pressing the brake pedal to decelerate or stop the vehicle.

Car brakes primarily rely on the friction between brake pads and brake discs to generate resistance, thereby slowing down or stopping the vehicle.

In earlier car models, many used a configuration of front disc brakes and rear drum brakes.

However, this method has a drawback: once the vehicle passes through water, a layer of water film is left between the brake pads and the brake drum, which reduces the friction between them and affects braking performance.

Therefore, most car models now adopt a configuration of front disc brakes plus rear disc brakes. Since the entire disc is exposed, no water droplets are retained, and when the wheels rotate, any water on the discs automatically disappears due to centrifugal force.

Another name for car brakes is the braking system. This includes all components that work together to slow or stop the vehicle, such as disc brakes, drum brakes, brake pads, calipers, and the hydraulic system. Disc brakes, commonly found on modern cars like the Ford Focus or BMW iX, use friction between pads and rotors to halt the wheels. Drum brakes, often seen in older or budget models like the Vauxhall Corsa, use shoes pressing against a drum.

The term "stopping system" is also occasionally used, though less technically precise. Brakes are critical for safety, with ABS (anti-lock braking system) now standard in most vehicles to prevent skidding. Regular maintenance—checking pad thickness, fluid levels, and rotor condition—is essential. If you hear squeaking or feel vibration when braking, it may indicate worn pads or warped discs, requiring professional inspection.
