What does 'P' mean in a car?

From an engineering perspective, 'P' in an automatic car is a mechanical lock within the transmission. It uses a parking pawl to physically prevent gear rotation, ensuring the vehicle stays stationary. Unlike the handbrake, which acts on the wheels, 'P' secures the drivetrain. Always use it with the handbrake for added safety.

The 'P' stands for Parking gear, which is a common setting in automatic transmission vehicles. Below are the main uses of the P gear:

Parking on level ground:

The P gear functions as both neutral and incorporates a braking mechanism. Engaging P gear means parking the vehicle. When temporarily stopping on flat roads, shifting to P gear puts the car's transmission in neutral operation, completely disconnecting power transmission between the engine and the output shaft.

Parking on slopes:

The P gear can also be used for parking on inclines. Its purpose is to ensure the automatic vehicle remains securely parked on slopes. The P gear enforces braking - automatic cars must be shifted to P gear before the ignition key can be removed, compelling drivers to properly secure the vehicle before taking the key.

In a car, 'P' stands for 'Park', a gear setting found in automatic transmissions. When selected, it locks the transmission, preventing the wheels from turning. This is essential for keeping the car stationary when parked, especially on inclines.

The 'P' mode engages a parking pawl, a small metal pin that locks the transmission gears. Unlike the handbrake, which secures the wheels, 'P' secures the drivetrain. For safety, always apply the handbrake before shifting into 'P' to reduce strain on the transmission.

In hybrid or electric cars like the Nissan Leaf or Tesla Model 3, 'P' may also activate the electronic parking brake automatically. Some modern cars even require 'P' to be engaged before turning off the ignition.

Never shift into 'P' while the car is moving, as this can damage the transmission. If your car has a start-stop system, ensure it's in 'P' before restarting. For manual cars, 'P' doesn't exist—you rely solely on the handbrake and gearstick in neutral.
