The EV badge on a car represents the electric mode in the vehicle's driving modes, typically found only on hybrid vehicles, and signifies that it is an electric vehicle. When the car is in EV mode, the petrol engine does not operate; only the electric motor is active. This mode is particularly suitable for use on congested urban roads, as it reduces fuel consumption and is highly environmentally friendly, producing no exhaust emissions.

For hybrid vehicles, the EV button can serve as an auxiliary mode but cannot be used as the primary driving mode. It is suitable for short-distance travel. However, when in EV mode, the petrol engine in a hybrid vehicle does not start, meaning the battery cannot be charged, resulting in a limited range in EV mode. Therefore, it is not advisable to use electric mode for long-distance journeys.

From an environmental perspective, EV means Electric Vehicle – a cleaner alternative to petrol or diesel cars. By eliminating exhaust emissions, EVs reduce air pollution and reliance on fossil fuels. However, their green credentials depend on how the electricity is generated (renewables vs. coal). Models like the Vauxhall Corsa-e show how mainstream brands are adopting EV tech.
