The AUTO setting in a car's air conditioning system automatically adjusts fan speed, temperature, and airflow distribution to maintain the set cabin temperature. It uses sensors to monitor conditions and optimise cooling or heating efficiency. To turn off the air con, press the AC button (usually marked with a snowflake symbol) or the OFF button if available. In some models, like the Vauxhall Corsa or Ford Focus, you may need to hold the fan speed dial or press a dedicated climate control power button.

If your car has dual-zone climate control (e.g., BMW iX or Tesla Model 3), ensure both zones are set to manual or press the sync button before switching off. For older models without digital controls, turning the temperature dial to the coldest setting often disengages the AC.

  1. Locate the AC button (snowflake icon) or OFF button on the dashboard.
  2. Press it once to deactivate the air con while keeping the fan running.
  3. To turn off the entire system, reduce the fan speed to zero or press the power button.
  4. In automatic systems, switching to manual mode overrides AUTO adjustments.

Leaving the system in AUTO is generally more energy-efficient, as it prevents overcooling. However, turning it off manually can save fuel in older petrol or diesel cars, though the impact is minimal in modern hybrids or EVs like the Nissan Leaf.

From a mechanical perspective, AUTO refers to the climate control system’s ability to self-regulate based on cabin sensors. It’s common in modern cars like the Volkswagen Golf or Audi A3. To disable it, override the automatic settings by manually adjusting fan speed or temperature. Some systems require holding the AUTO button for three seconds. If unsure, consult your owner’s manual—the process varies by manufacturer.

AUTO in a car stands for automatic. This button is commonly used on the car air conditioner, referring to the automatic air conditioning mode, which differs from the manual mode. In automatic mode, the car's air conditioner will automatically adjust to a suitable temperature and fan speed.

The methods to turn off the car air conditioner are:

  1. Adjust the air conditioner's fan speed switch to the 0 position;

Then rotate the cooling/heating switch to the middle. The blue section represents cold air, and the red section represents hot air. Rotating to the middle will turn off the air conditioner.

  1. Press the MENU button below the AUTO button on the air conditioner. The central control screen will display the air conditioner control interface, with an on/off button in the top-left corner. Click it to turn off the air conditioner.
  2. If you only want to turn off the cooling function of the air conditioner, press the AC switch on the air conditioner, and the cooling function will be disabled. At this point, the air conditioner will blow natural air.

It is recommended to turn off the car air conditioner 3 minutes before reaching your destination. This allows natural air to lower the temperature of the air conditioner pipes, reducing the temperature difference between the pipes and the outside environment, thus preventing bacterial growth. When starting the car, wait for about 3 minutes before turning on the air conditioner to reduce the engine's burden and extend its lifespan.
