Lead-acid batteries are chemical reaction devices composed of positive and negative plates, separators, and a solution containing sulphuric acid, used for storing and discharging electricity. In cases of low fluid levels, battery replenishment fluid or distilled water can be added. Tap water and purified water contain certain minerals and should not be used as substitutes for battery replenishment fluid.

Function of battery fluid:

Battery fluid, also known as electrolyte, is a dilute sulphuric acid solution made from distilled water and sulphuric acid. It is used to react with the plates in the battery to facilitate charging and discharging.

From a chemical safety perspective, there is no direct substitute for battery fluid (sulphuric acid solution). Attempting to use alternatives like lemon juice or saltwater can lead to dangerous reactions, including gas release or corrosion. Distilled water is the only acceptable addition for topping up lead-acid batteries, but only to compensate for evaporation. For modern sealed batteries, no intervention is needed—tampering voids warranties.

For maintenance-free or AGM batteries, no topping up is required. If the battery fluid is significantly depleted, replacing the battery is often the safest option.

Topping up a lead-acid battery correctly involves a few steps:

  1. Check the battery fluid levels by removing the caps (if applicable). The fluid should cover the lead plates.
  2. If low, add only distilled water until the plates are submerged, avoiding overfilling.
  3. Never add acid unless the battery has been fully drained and refilled professionally.

Using alternatives like baking soda solutions or vinegar is unsafe—they neutralise the acid, rendering the battery ineffective. For electric vehicles (e.g., Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf), the high-voltage battery is sealed and requires no fluid maintenance. Always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines before attempting any battery maintenance.
