VW50200 is a Volkswagen Group engine oil specification designed for petrol engines. It meets stringent requirements for viscosity, thermal stability, and wear protection, particularly in high-performance or turbocharged engines. The corresponding oil is typically a fully synthetic 5W-40 or 0W-40, though some 5W-30 oils may also meet the standard if explicitly certified.

Key features of VW50200-compliant oils include:

  1. High-temperature stability to prevent breakdown under heavy loads.
  2. Enhanced wear protection for components like camshafts and turbochargers.
  3. Compatibility with extended service intervals (up to 30,000 km or 2 years, depending on the model).

Popular oils meeting this standard include Castrol Edge 5W-40, Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30, and Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40. Always check your owner’s manual or use Volkswagen’s official oil selector tool to confirm compatibility, as using the wrong oil can void warranties or cause engine damage.

From a mechanic’s perspective, VW50200 oils are non-negotiable for VW Group cars. They’re formulated to handle direct injection, turbocharging, and stop-start systems. Skipping this spec risks sludge buildup or premature wear. Look for the VW50200 stamp on the bottle—generic "European" oils won’t cut it. Common picks are Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 or Fuchs Titan GT1.

VW50200 is a Volkswagen oil standard from Germany, with the corresponding oil grade being API SN. Only oils that comply with this standard may be used by Volkswagen as original equipment manufacturer (OEM) oil.

Since VW50200 corresponds to API SN grade, when selecting engine oil, you can use it with confidence as long as the oil grade is no lower than API SN. The API classification is a quality standard for engine oil established by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

Among these, 'S' denotes specifications for petrol engines, while 'C' indicates specifications for diesel engines. Taking petrol engine oil standards as an example, they are divided into 12 grades from SA to SN. The later the letter in the alphabet, the higher the grade, with SN being the highest grade.
