The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) contains a character that indicates the model year of a car. This is typically the 10th digit in a 17-digit VIN. A standard reference table decodes this digit, with letters and numbers representing specific years. For example, 'A' stands for 1980, 'B' for 1981, and so on, skipping certain letters (I, O, Q, U, Z) for clarity. From 2001 onwards, numbers were reintroduced (1=2001, 2=2002, etc.), followed by letters again from 2010 (A=2010, B=2011).

To find your car's model year:

  1. Locate the 17-digit VIN (on the windscreen, door frame, or V5C logbook).
  2. Identify the 10th character.
  3. Cross-reference it with a VIN year chart (available from the DVLA or manufacturers).

Note that some older or imported vehicles may use different systems. For example, a 2023 Nissan Leaf might have 'P' as the 10th digit, while a 2015 Ford Focus could show 'F'. Always verify with official sources if unsure.

The Vehicle Identification Number Year Reference Table codes and their corresponding patterns are as follows:

The characters representing the year are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y. The codes follow a 30-year cycle. For example, if 2001 is the starting point, its code would be 1, and so on. To avoid confusion with 1, 0, 2, and V, the letters I, O, Q, Z, and U are not used in the VIN to represent the year.

The Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, is a unique 17-character alphanumeric code assigned to each vehicle. It identifies the manufacturer, engine, chassis number, and other specifications of the vehicle.

Each character in the VIN has a specific meaning. Positions 1 to 3 represent the country of manufacture, the manufacturer, and the vehicle type. Positions 4 to 9 denote vehicle characteristics, as defined by the manufacturer. The 10th character indicates the model year, represented by a letter or number. The 11th character specifies the assembly plant, also defined by the manufacturer. Positions 12 to 17 are the production sequence number.
