From a cost-saving perspective, minor scratches can often be remedied at home. Use a mixture of baking soda and water to create a paste, applying it gently with a cloth. For deeper marks, consider a DIY glass repair kit, which costs less than a professional fix. Always test any method on a small area first to avoid further damage.

Scratches on rearview mirrors can impair visibility and compromise safety. The best approach depends on scratch depth. For light surface scratches, polishing with a mild abrasive like toothpaste or a dedicated scratch remover can work. Deeper scratches may require professional repair or mirror replacement.

  1. Assess the scratch depth: Run your fingernail over it. If it catches, it’s deep and may need professional attention.
  2. Clean the mirror: Use a microfiber cloth and glass cleaner to remove dirt.
  3. Light scratches: Apply a small amount of non-gel toothpaste or a glass polish, rubbing in circular motions with a soft cloth. Wipe clean and check results.
  4. Deep scratches: Consult a professional. Replacing the mirror glass or entire unit might be necessary, especially if the scratch obstructs vision.

Prevent future scratches by avoiding abrasive cleaners and parking carefully. Some drivers opt for anti-scratch coatings or heated mirrors (common in models like the BMW iX or Tesla Model 3) to reduce fogging and minimise contact with the surface.

If there are scratches on the rearview mirror, we can use special repair agents or wax to fix them.

After a car's rearview mirror is scratched, if it is a new car and the first maintenance has not been completed yet, some scratches can be addressed by the repair technicians at the 4S shop during the first maintenance. They will use professional repair tools to fix the issue.

If only the surface layer is scratched and the black part is not exposed, it means the car's primer has not been damaged, and repainting will be simpler. Due to differences in car brands, the paint used also varies, especially for white paint, which includes pearl white, ivory white, matte white, etc. If there are such scratches, we encourage friends to go to a 4S shop for repairs.

For very small scratches, wax can be used for repair. Before repairing, it is necessary to clean the scratches on the rearview mirror. The cleaning method involves wiping in straight lines. You can first use coarse wax and then fine wax to repair, which will remove almost all small scratches.

There are multiple ways to deal with minor paint scratches on the rearview mirror:

  1. Use a color-changing film to cover it, applying a film of a different color or one that matches the original car color.
  2. Use a touch-up pen for repairs.
  3. Repair the scratched area by repainting.
  4. Leave it unrepaired.

All the above methods can effectively address paint loss on the vehicle's rearview mirror. Changing the color of the rearview mirror is not illegal because the area of the rearview mirror does not exceed 30% of the vehicle's body area, so you can confidently change its color.

During the use of motor vehicles, scratches on the rearview mirror are relatively common because the rearview mirror is located on the exterior of the vehicle, making it very susceptible to damage. When parking or meeting another vehicle, be sure to protect the rearview mirror and fold it in time to avoid damage. When the motor vehicle is parked, always fold the rearview mirror to effectively prevent scratches.
