It comes in grades like 5W-30 (the 'W' stands for winter, indicating cold-weather performance). Modern synthetic oils, such as those used in a Ford Focus or BMW iX, offer better longevity and protection.

Lubricating oil, on the other hand, may lack engine-specific additives. It’s used in gearboxes, hydraulic systems, or even household tools. For example, a manual gearbox might use 75W-90 gear oil, which is thicker and formulated for different pressures.

Key differences:

  1. Application: Engine oil is for engines; lubricating oil has wider uses.
  2. Additives: Engine oil contains detergents and dispersants to handle combustion residues.

Lubricating oil serves general purposes, often lacking these specialised additives. For instance, a Tesla Model 3’s reduction gear uses lubricating oil, not engine oil, as it doesn’t face combustion contaminants.
