Symptoms of Timing Belt Misalignment

Symptoms of timing belt misalignment:

1. Minor timing belt misalignment: The car experiences poor acceleration and difficulty climbing hills;
2. Moderate timing belt misalignment: The car has no idle speed, idles roughly, produces unusual noises from the exhaust pipe, and stalls when accelerating;
3. Severe timing belt misalignment: The car fails to start, the engine produces knocking noises, and may even sustain engine damage.

Function of the timing belt:

The timing belt plays a pivotal role in engine operation. It connects the timing wheel on the engine's cylinder head at the top to the crankshaft timing wheel at the bottom. The timing wheel is linked to the camshaft, which has cams that interact with small rocker arms. The force transmitted by the timing belt creates pressure, enabling the lifting action.

The intake valves lift to allow atomised fuel into the cylinder block, while the exhaust valves lift to let exhaust gases escape. When the camshaft's non-cam sections simultaneously contact the rocker arms, both intake and exhaust valves close, creating compression. The distributor then ignites the mixture, initiating internal combustion for power generation.

Timing belt misalignment can cause serious engine damage if not addressed promptly. The most common symptoms include unusual engine noises (ticking, rattling, or squealing), misfires, rough idling, and difficulty starting the car. In severe cases, the engine may fail to start altogether. You might also notice reduced fuel efficiency or the check engine light illuminating.

2. Engine misfires: If the belt slips, the camshaft and crankshaft lose synchronisation, leading to misfires or hesitation.
