Symptoms of a Faulty Ignition Coil

There are three symptoms indicating a faulty engine ignition coil:

  1. The vehicle body vibrates noticeably when idling.
  2. If the ignition coil fails while driving, the vehicle will exhibit poor acceleration.
  3. Upon opening the bonnet and observing the running engine, noticeable engine vibration can be detected.

The presence of any of these three symptoms indicates a faulty engine ignition coil. Insufficient energy from the ignition coil can cause poor performance in one of the engine's cylinders, or even result in a complete failure of a cylinder.

If only one ignition coil is faulty, continued driving can be highly detrimental to the engine, engine mounts, and connecting components. It is advisable to promptly visit a 4S dealership to replace the faulty ignition coil.

If ignition coils in more than one cylinder are damaged, it is recommended to stop driving immediately and have the vehicle towed to a 4S dealership or garage for replacement and repairs.

A faulty ignition coil typically shows several clear symptoms. The most common signs include engine misfires (feeling like jerking or hesitation during acceleration), rough idling, reduced fuel efficiency, difficulty starting the car, and an illuminated check engine light. In severe cases, the engine may stall completely.

Ignition coils convert the battery’s low voltage into the high voltage needed to create a spark in the spark plugs. When they fail, the engine’s combustion process is disrupted. Misfires often trigger the check engine light, and a diagnostic scan will usually reveal codes like P0300 (random misfire) or P0351-P0358 (specific coil circuit faults).

  1. Engine misfires: You’ll notice uneven power delivery, especially under load. A Tesla Model 3 or Ford Focus might jerk or hesitate when accelerating.
  2. Rough idling: The engine may shake or vibrate excessively when stationary.
  3. Poor fuel economy: Inefficient combustion leads to higher fuel consumption, noticeable in models like the Vauxhall Corsa.
  4. Hard starts: A weak or failing coil may struggle to generate enough spark, making the engine slow to turn over.
  5. Stalling: Complete coil failure can cause the engine to cut out, particularly in stop-start traffic.

If you suspect a faulty ignition coil, have it diagnosed promptly. Delaying repairs can damage the catalytic converter or lead to more expensive issues.

From a mechanic’s perspective, the key symptom of a faulty ignition coil is a misfire under load. When accelerating hard, the engine may stumble or lose power momentarily. A quick diagnostic scan will often pinpoint the issue. Other signs include a strong smell of unburnt fuel from the exhaust or visible corrosion on the coil itself. Replacing a faulty coil early prevents further damage to spark plugs or the catalytic converter.
