To quickly and effectively defog your car’s windscreen, use warm air. Cold air can remove condensation, but warm air is more efficient because it absorbs moisture faster and prevents fog from re-forming. Here’s how to do it properly:

  1. Turn on the heater and set it to the highest temperature.
  2. Direct airflow to the windscreen using the defrost setting (usually marked with a windscreen symbol).
  3. Switch on the air conditioning (A/C) to dehumidify the air, even in winter.
  4. Crack open a window slightly to allow excess moisture to escape.

Using cold air might seem logical, but it only temporarily clears fog by cooling the glass, which can cause condensation to return. Warm air, combined with A/C, tackles the root cause by reducing humidity inside the car. This method works well in most conditions, whether it’s cold or damp outside.

From a physics standpoint, warm air is superior for defogging. Fog forms when warm, moist air hits a cold surface (like a windscreen), condensing into water droplets. Warm air raises the glass temperature, reducing condensation. Cold air can clear fog temporarily but doesn’t address humidity. For best results, combine warm air with A/C to dry the cabin air.
