The recirculation symbol indicates that the air inside the vehicle is being circulated when the system is closed, represented by an icon of a car interior with a circular arrow. The fresh air symbol shows that outside air is being drawn into the vehicle, depicted by an open car icon with an external arrow pointing into the car.

Recirculation means the interior air is reheated or recooled before being redistributed inside the cabin, whereas fresh air mode involves heating or cooling external air before introducing it into the vehicle - essentially exchanging interior and exterior air. Typically, whether using heating or cooling, we initially activate recirculation. However, prolonged use leads to increased carbon dioxide levels from passengers' exhalation, so it's advisable to switch to fresh air mode every hour to refresh the cabin atmosphere.

The principle of recirculation is simply to circulate interior air, particularly useful when operating the heater in winter or air conditioning in summer. Summer air conditioning requires compressor operation, necessitating activation of the A/C button before starting the cooling system, which consequently results in higher fuel consumption when using air conditioning during warmer months.

From a mechanic’s perspective, the recirculation button isn’t just about comfort—it affects system wear. Constantly recirculating air strains the cabin filter and can lead to musty smells if the filter isn’t changed regularly. For cars like the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Corsa, replacing the pollen filter every 12-18 months prevents this. If the aircon smells odd, recirculation mode might be the culprit.

The recirculation symbol in a car, typically represented by a curved arrow inside a car icon, controls the air conditioning system's airflow. When activated, it recirculates the air already inside the car rather than drawing in outside air. This is useful in heavy traffic to avoid exhaust fumes, in hot weather to cool the cabin faster, or when driving through dusty areas to maintain cleaner air. However, prolonged use can lead to stale air and increased humidity, so it's best used intermittently.

For optimal use:

  1. Engage recirculation in stop-and-go traffic to minimise pollution intake.
  2. Use it briefly when cooling the car on a hot day for faster temperature reduction.
  3. Avoid prolonged use to prevent window fogging in humid conditions.
  4. Switch back to fresh air mode periodically for better ventilation.

Modern systems, like those in the Tesla Model 3 or BMW iX, often automate recirculation based on air quality sensors. If your car lacks this feature, manually adjusting it based on driving conditions ensures a balance between air quality and comfort.
