As a driving instructor, I emphasise the importance of muscle memory for keyless shutdown:

  1. Stop, foot on brake.
  2. Shift to 'Park'.
  3. Press start/stop button.
  4. Engage handbrake.

New drivers often forget step 2, risking rollaways—especially in cars like the Ford Focus where the gearstick lacks tactile feedback. Always double-check the gear display.

Keyless automatic transmission shutdown steps:

  1. Before shutting down, you must shift into P gear.
  2. Then press the start button to achieve shutdown.

The start button on a keyless start car is labeled START or STOP, indicating that both starting and stopping the engine require this button.

Automatic transmission models must shift into P gear before shutting down, which is a safety design.

Both P gear and N gear of automatic transmission models can be used when parking, but there are some differences between these two gears.

P gear has a locking mechanism, while N gear does not. After shifting into P gear, the locking mechanism can lock the gear inside the transmission, which is equivalent to indirectly locking the wheels. At this time, the car will not slip if the brake is not pressed.

After shifting an automatic transmission car into N gear, there is no locking mechanism to lock the transmission gear. If the handbrake is not applied at this time, the car will slip.

To safely shut down a keyless automatic transmission car, follow these steps:

  1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop and ensure it is in 'Park' (P). The gear selector should be engaged correctly to prevent rolling.
  2. Press the brake pedal firmly to maintain control while shutting down the system.
  3. Press the engine start/stop button once to turn off the ignition. The dashboard lights should go off, confirming the engine has stopped.
  4. If your car has an electronic parking brake (EPB), engage it for added security, especially on inclines.
  5. Check that all accessories (lights, infotainment) are off before exiting.

Some modern cars, like the BMW iX or Tesla Model 3, may automatically engage 'Park' when the driver’s door opens, but manually confirming this step is safer. Always refer to your owner’s manual for model-specific nuances, such as hybrid systems (e.g., Nissan Leaf) requiring extra steps to power down the battery.

Never leave the vehicle in 'Neutral' (N) when shutting down, as this risks accidental movement. If the keyless fob battery is low, keep it near the start button during shutdown to avoid errors.
