It is not advisable to sleep in a car without opening the windows, as prolonged periods may lead to oxygen deprivation and suffocation. However, whether suffocation occurs largely depends on the adequacy of oxygen inside the vehicle. Under normal circumstances, if all doors and windows are tightly closed, the oxygen level is generally sufficient for one person sleeping in the car. However, if there are more than two people without proper ventilation, the risk of oxygen deprivation and suffocation increases significantly.

Sleeping in a car with the engine idling and the air conditioning on, without opening the windows for ventilation, is extremely dangerous. When the engine runs at idle for extended periods, incomplete fuel combustion occurs, producing carbon monoxide gas. Inhaling excessive amounts of carbon monoxide can lead to poisoning. Therefore, it is essential to turn off the engine when sleeping in a car.

If you choose to sleep in an open and well-ventilated area, it is still recommended to slightly open the windows to ensure adequate airflow and ventilation inside the vehicle.

From a medical perspective, sleeping in a sealed car risks oxygen depletion and CO2 buildup, which can cause headaches, dizziness, or worse. Always crack a window for ventilation. Avoid idling the engine, as CO—a silent, odourless killer—can seep into the cabin. If you feel drowsy or nauseous, exit immediately. This is especially critical for children or pets, who are more vulnerable to poor air quality.

Sleeping in a car with the windows closed can be safe under certain conditions, but it carries risks if proper precautions aren’t taken. The main concern is carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, which can occur if the engine is left running or if the car is parked in an enclosed space like a garage. Even with the engine off, poor ventilation can lead to a buildup of exhaled carbon dioxide, reducing air quality.

For safe overnight stays:

  1. Park in a well-ventilated area, ideally outdoors.
  2. Never leave the engine running.
  3. Crack a window slightly (1-2 cm) to allow airflow.
  4. Use a CO detector if sleeping in the car regularly.
  5. Avoid overcrowding – too many people can deplete oxygen levels quickly.

Modern cars with good insulation may trap moisture, leading to condensation and discomfort. In colder weather, use proper bedding instead of relying on the car’s heating system to avoid battery drain. Models like the Tesla Model 3 with "Camp Mode" are designed for safer overnight stays by maintaining airflow and temperature without engine use.

Sleeping in a car without ventilation is dangerous. Always leave windows slightly open to ensure airflow, especially when using the heater in winter. Without ventilation, carbon monoxide buildup can lead to poisoning.

To maintain your car’s heating and air conditioning system:

  1. Replace the cabin air filter every 3-6 months. If inspection shows it’s still clean, reinstall it.
  2. Clean the heating and air conditioning ducts every six months to prevent mould and odours.
  3. Check the compressor’s refrigerant levels annually.

The heating system requires the engine to be running and should only be used at one-third capacity for safety. The air conditioning can be activated immediately by pressing the AC button, without waiting for the engine to warm up.
