Opening a sensor-activated boot (also called a hands-free or kick-activated boot) is straightforward once you know the correct technique. Most modern cars like the Ford Focus or VW Golf offer this feature. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Ensure the key fob is on your person (within 1-2 metres of the boot). The car must recognise the key’s proximity.
  2. Stand directly behind the boot, facing it. Locate the sensor area, usually beneath the rear bumper (check your manual for exact placement).
  3. Swiftly extend your foot under the bumper and retract it in a kicking motion—no need to touch the car. Avoid slow or exaggerated movements.
  4. Wait a second for the boot to unlock and lift automatically. If it doesn’t, repeat the motion slightly faster.

Common mistakes include kicking too high or too slowly, or standing too close. Some models, like the BMW iX, require a pause between the kick and the boot opening. If the system fails, check for low key fob battery or obstructions near the sensor.

For safety, the boot won’t open if the car is moving or if the key isn’t detected. Consult your vehicle’s manual for model-specific quirks—for example, the Tesla Model 3 requires a double-kick in some configurations.

From a dealership perspective, sensor-activated boots are a popular selling point for families and shoppers carrying heavy loads. Brands like Vauxhall and Nissan emphasise this feature in estates and SUVs (e.g., Nissan Qashqai). The key is consistency: a single, fluid kick under the bumper’s centre, not a swing. Sales staff often demo it during test drives—ask them to show you the exact sensor location, as it varies by model.

The sensor-activated trunk is equipped with sensors underneath that allow the trunk to be opened or closed through sensing. Simply wave your foot under the sensor to open the trunk.

There are 4 key points to note when using the sensor-activated trunk:

  1. Ensure the remote key is carried with you and perform the action: Make sure the remote key is on your person, the battery is sufficiently charged, and perform a light kicking motion under the sensor on the left side of the rear bumper.
  2. Frequent operation will trigger protection mode: If this function is used too frequently, it will enter protection mode and will require some time before it can be used again.
  3. The function may not work properly due to dirt: If the sensor is affected by snow, ice, or dirt, the function may not operate correctly. Therefore, keep the sensor clean.
  4. This function can close the trunk but does not mean the vehicle is locked: To lock the vehicle, press the lock button on the key.
