How to Use BMW's M/S Gear Effectively

Many BMW models are equipped with a semi-automatic transmission, yet most drivers tend to leave it in 'D' mode indefinitely. b) Hill climbing/descending: On steep inclines (including multi-storey car parks), small-engined cars struggle in D mode. Manual selection of 1st/2nd gear improves climbing ability. During descents, manual 1st gear provides engine braking, reducing brake system strain.

c) Snow/ice starts: D mode's default 1st gear can cause wheelspin on slippery surfaces. Starting manually in 2nd gear reduces torque for better traction.

d) Cornering: D mode requires braking before corners. Manual downshifting before turns enables better speed control, with maintained RPM allowing quicker exit acceleration.
