To unlock the small buckle in the middle seat belt of the back seat, locate the release button on the buckle itself. Press the button firmly while gently pulling the seat belt tongue out. If it’s stuck, check for debris or twisted webbing that may be jamming the mechanism.

For stubborn buckles, try these steps:

  1. Inspect the buckle for visible obstructions like crumbs or dirt. Use a small brush or compressed air to clean it.
  2. Ensure the seat belt isn’t twisted. Straighten the webbing to relieve tension.
  3. Apply a small amount of silicone spray to the buckle mechanism to ease movement—avoid oil-based lubricants, which attract dirt.
  4. If the buckle still won’t release, consult the vehicle’s manual or a professional, as forcing it may damage the locking mechanism.

Common causes include food particles, prolonged pressure, or wear. In models like the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Corsa, the middle seat belt buckle is often less frequently used, making it prone to sticking. Regular cleaning and occasional lubrication can prevent future issues.

To unlock the small buckle in the middle seat belt of the back seat, press the button down and the small plug can be pulled out. For the larger plug, press it downward and then pull it out.

In the back seat belts of a car, the side belts are similar to the front seat belts. Pull the belt out, ensuring the shoulder strap crosses the chest and the lap belt fits snugly over the hips, then insert it into the buckle.

The buckle positions for the back seat are usually located on the inner side of the seat. If you can't find them, it might be because they are covered by aftermarket seat covers or were not pulled out during disassembly and got pressed under the seat.

Some cars have shorter buckles designed to be hidden in the seam between the seat cushion and the backrest of the rear seat. Once found, you can pull them out.

Avoid pulling out the rear seat belt buckles unless absolutely necessary, as they serve to protect passengers, especially when driving on highways where rear seat belts are also required.

From a mechanic’s perspective: The middle seat belt buckle often sticks due to infrequent use. If the release button doesn’t work, don’t force it. Instead, wiggle the seat belt tongue while pressing the button—this can dislodge minor obstructions. For persistent issues, a dealership or garage can safely dismantle and clean the mechanism without risking damage to the seat belt’s safety function.
