Methods to switch off the illuminated boot light:

  1. Press the button inside the vehicle or on the remote key fob, and the boot will open automatically;
  2. Press the close button inside the boot or the vehicle's interior, or use the remote key fob, and the boot will close by itself;
  3. The issue may be a faulty boot sensor switch. There's a push-button switch on the side of the boot lid which controls the boot light. When the boot is closed, the switch is pressed and the light turns off. Upon opening the boot, the switch releases and the light comes on. If this mechanism fails, the switch likely requires repair.

To turn off the boot light in most modern cars, locate the switch near the boot latch or on the interior trim. The light typically turns off automatically when the boot is closed, but if it stays on, check for a manual override switch. In some models like the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Corsa, this switch is integrated into the boot latch mechanism.

If the light remains on despite closing the boot properly, inspect the boot latch sensor, which may be faulty. Dirt or misalignment can prevent the sensor from registering the boot is closed. Cleaning the latch area with a soft cloth might resolve the issue.

For older vehicles, the boot light may have a separate toggle switch on the light housing itself. If the light still doesn’t turn off, the problem could be a stuck switch or wiring fault. Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes may reset the system.

Persistent issues may require professional diagnosis, especially if the light drains the battery. Refer to the owner’s manual for model-specific guidance, as some cars (e.g., BMW iX) have settings in the infotainment system to adjust boot light behaviour.

From a mechanic’s perspective, a stuck boot light often points to a faulty boot latch sensor. Common culprits include dirt buildup or a worn-out switch. Try cleaning the latch area with electrical contact cleaner. If that fails, test the switch with a multimeter. In models like the Nissan Leaf, the sensor is delicate—forcing the boot shut can damage it. Always check the owner’s manual before tampering with wiring.
