How to wash a motorcycle:
- Ride the bike into an indoor washing area, but note this crucial point: never rinse the body directly when the engine is still hot. Wait for the engine to cool down before starting.
Particularly in winter, even in an indoor or garage washing area, temperatures won’t be very high. Rinsing the body or engine with cold water while the engine is still hot can cause significant damage.
- When using a pressure washer, ensure you don’t hold it too close to the body—maintain a reasonable distance. Avoid spraying directly at the engine. Instead, angle the spray downward or sideways from above the body. Don’t over-rinse; just remove surface dust. For heavily soiled areas like body panels, targeted high-pressure cleaning is acceptable.
- After rinsing the body, evenly apply car wash solution (foam) across the surface, still being cautious around the engine. Then use a soft sponge to scrub for deeper cleaning.
- After deep cleaning, wait 2–3 minutes to let the cleaning agents work effectively. Rinse thoroughly, but don’t dry the bike immediately with a cloth. Unlike cars, motorcycles have many exposed parts, joints, and seams.
Residual water can easily seep into hidden areas after rinsing. Use an air gun to blow out water from crevices or hard-to-reach spots. This prevents leftover water from freezing in concealed areas when riding outdoors later.
- After blowing dry, use a microfiber cloth to wipe the surface.
- Once fully dry, apply wax to the body panels. Wait five minutes after even application, then buff with a slightly dry cloth. Finally, wipe the tyres thoroughly, as un-dried water in winter can create hazardous icy patches when riding.
