How much distance should be left before and after reversing into the parking space

When reversing into a parking space, aim to leave approximately 1 metre (3 feet) of space in front and behind your vehicle. This provides enough room to manoeuvre safely without risking contact with other cars or obstacles.

For optimal positioning:

  1. Align your car parallel to the parking bay, leaving about 1 metre between your vehicle and the one in front.
  2. Begin reversing slowly, using your mirrors and rear-view camera (if equipped) to monitor the distance behind.
  3. Stop once there’s roughly 1 metre of space between your rear bumper and the end of the bay or any obstruction.

This distance accounts for slight adjustments and ensures you’re centred in the space. Modern cars with parking sensors or automated systems (like those in a BMW iX or Tesla Model 3) can assist, but manual checks are still advisable.

Leaving less space may make exiting tricky, especially in tight car parks, while excessive gaps waste space and inconvenience others. Adjust slightly for larger vehicles (e.g., SUVs) or compact bays.

When reversing into the parking space, the best distance between the corner of the space and the car body is 30cm. Before reversing, first check the situation behind the car, estimate the reversing route, and ensure that the front of the car will not hit any obstacles. During reversing, try to control the speed with the clutch to avoid going too fast.

Precautions for reversing into the parking space:

  1. When reversing, pay attention to the surrounding environment of the vehicle. Do not focus solely on the rear of the car, especially when there are vehicles on both sides. Occasionally check whether the front bumper of your car might hit the vehicles on either side.
  2. Before parking, when passing by the parking space, also pay attention in advance to whether there are obstacles around the parking space, whether the terrain is flat, and whether there are any obstacles in the parking space.
  3. If there are obstacles on both sides when parking, try to keep the car body close to the left when reversing to the left, and close to the right when reversing to the right. This is more conducive to turning the steering wheel back to the correct position early and shortening the reversing distance. The steering wheel should be straightened before the car comes to a complete stop, or even turned in the opposite direction once, which can save a lot of trouble when the car exits the parking space.

A mechanic’s perspective: Focus on tyre clearance. When reversing, stop once your rear tyres are 30-50cm from the kerb or bay end. This prevents scraping alloys and simplifies straightening the wheels. For front clearance, ensure the bumper doesn’t overhang the bay—critical for avoiding parking fines or blocking pedestrian pathways.
