36When reversing into a parking space, aim to leave approximately 1 metre (3 feet) of space in front and behind your vehicle. This provides enough room to manoeuvre safely without risking contact with other cars or obstacles.
For optimal positioning:
- Align your car parallel to the parking bay, leaving about 1 metre between your vehicle and the one in front.
- Begin reversing slowly, using your mirrors and rear-view camera (if equipped) to monitor the distance behind.
- Stop once there’s roughly 1 metre of space between your rear bumper and the end of the bay or any obstruction.
This distance accounts for slight adjustments and ensures you’re centred in the space. Modern cars with parking sensors or automated systems (like those in a BMW iX or Tesla Model 3) can assist, but manual checks are still advisable.
Leaving less space may make exiting tricky, especially in tight car parks, while excessive gaps waste space and inconvenience others. Adjust slightly for larger vehicles (e.g., SUVs) or compact bays.
