Repainting a car typically takes between 3 to 7 days, depending on the complexity of the job, the size of the vehicle, and the quality of the finish required. A basic respray (single colour, no major repairs) may take 3-4 days, while a full custom job with multiple layers, clear coat, and detailing can extend to a week or more.

  1. Preparation (1-2 days): The car is stripped of trim, sanded, and any dents or rust are repaired.
  2. Priming (1 day): A primer is applied and left to cure.
  3. Painting (1-2 days): Base coats are sprayed, followed by clear coat for protection and shine.
  4. Drying and polishing (1-2 days): The paint must fully cure before reassembly and buffing.

Factors like weather (humidity affects drying), workshop capacity, and paint type (water-based vs. solvent) also influence timelines. For a small scratch or panel touch-up, some garages offer same-day services.

From a bodyshop technician’s view, repainting a car isn’t just about spraying paint. Rushing leads to poor adhesion or orange-peel texture. A proper job requires meticulous prep—sanding, masking, and cleaning—before any paint touches the car. Even with modern fast-drying paints, skipping steps risks bubbles or peeling later. Most reputable shops quote 5 days to ensure quality.

Repainting a car usually takes 2 to 3 days, with a minimum of one day required.

When repainting a car, the scratched area needs to be cleaned, then filled with putty to level the surface. After the putty dries, the car is repainted, and you must wait for the paint to fully dry before using the vehicle again.

The entire process takes at least 2 to 3 days. If the owner is in a hurry and has good DIY skills, and the car has only minor scratches that haven’t damaged the primer, the owner can apply household toothpaste to the scratched area, then gently rub it with a soft cloth in a clockwise motion for about 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse the area with clean water to complete a simple repair.

The steps for repainting are as follows:

  1. Thoroughly clean the surface to be repaired before starting;
  2. Use alcohol to remove wax, moisture, grease, and rust from the area to improve paint adhesion;
  3. Shake the touch-up paint pen vigorously before use, listening for the sound of the mixing ball and shaking it at least 30 times;
  4. Open the cap of the touch-up pen while it is upright to avoid paint spillage;
  5. For deeper scratches, apply the paint repeatedly with the brush;
  6. The touch-up paint may leave an uneven surface. After the paint dries completely, use 2000-grit wet sandpaper to smooth it until the surface is level with the surrounding area.
