How Long Can You Run the Air Conditioner While Parked

Running the air conditioner while parked depends on the car’s battery capacity and engine type. In a petrol or diesel car, idling for extended periods to power the AC can waste fuel (around 0.5-1 litre per hour) and may cause engine wear. For electric vehicles (EVs) like the Tesla Model 3 or Nissan Leaf, using the AC drains the battery—typically 1-3% per hour, depending on settings.

Key factors affecting runtime:

  1. Battery health: Older batteries deplete faster.
  2. Temperature: Extreme heat increases AC load.
  3. Car design: EVs often have "camp mode" for efficient climate control.

For safety, avoid prolonged idling in enclosed spaces due to carbon monoxide risk. In EVs, monitor battery levels to avoid stranding. A practical limit is 2-3 hours for most cars, but always prioritise ventilation and fuel/battery conservation.

In theory, as long as the car has fuel and battery, the air conditioner can run indefinitely. However, in reality, when the car is parked, it is generally recommended to run the air conditioner for no more than 15 minutes at a time.

Reasons to avoid running the air conditioner for extended periods while parked:

  1. Prolonged use of the air conditioner while parked can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. In an enclosed space, a car with the air conditioner on can exceed safe carbon monoxide levels in just 20 minutes. Therefore, if you must run the air conditioner while parked for an extended period, open the windows periodically for ventilation or switch to external circulation mode.
  2. Increased fuel consumption. When parked, the engine idles at a low RPM, resulting in low intake pressure. This causes the engine to increase the throttle opening, thereby increasing fuel injection.
  3. Extended idling can lead to poor heat dissipation, damaging the car's engine. When parked, the engine idles at a low RPM, reducing oil pump pressure. This results in insufficient lubrication between the engine's friction surfaces, accelerating wear and tear.

From a mechanic’s perspective, idling to run the AC strains the engine and wastes fuel. Modern cars manage this better, but prolonged idling can lead to carbon buildup and reduced oil efficiency. For EVs, it’s safer but still drains the battery. If you must, limit it to 30 minutes—enough to cool the cabin without significant damage.
