Car Reminder to Change Engine Oil

The car's reminder to change engine oil means that when the oil level is insufficient, the oil pump's output decreases or fails to pump oil due to air intake, resulting in a drop in oil pressure. The car will then illuminate the low oil pressure warning light, and the dashboard will display a prompt to change the oil immediately, reminding the owner to replenish the oil as soon as possible and perform maintenance to avoid engine damage caused by insufficient oil. The car can still be driven for up to 50 kilometers after the oil change reminder appears.

Replacement cycle: This varies depending on the type of oil used. Generally, fully synthetic oil should be changed every 10,000 kilometers or once a year; semi-synthetic oil should be changed every 7,500 kilometers or every 7 to 8 months; mineral oil should be changed every 5,000 kilometers or every 6 months. To check the oil level, observe whether the dipstick reading falls within the normal range.

Specific steps are as follows:

  1. Park the vehicle on a flat surface, turn off the engine, and wait for 15 minutes to allow the oil to drain back into the oil pan.
  2. Remove the dipstick for the first time, wipe it clean, and slowly reinsert it, ensuring it reaches the bottom of the oil pan.
  3. Remove the dipstick again and check the oil level. If the level is between the upper and lower limits on the dipstick, it is normal. If it is above the upper limit, some oil needs to be drained. If the oil level is below the lower limit, the appropriate amount of oil should be added.

From a mechanic’s perspective: ignore the "once a year" myth. Oil change frequency hinges on usage. A Nissan Leaf doing 20,000 motorway miles annually might need fewer changes than a BMW iX used for school runs. Synthetic oil resists breakdown better, but contaminants (dust, fuel dilution) still accumulate. Check the dipstick monthly—if the oil’s black or low, book a change.
