The BMW trunk switch is located on the left side of the steering wheel, on the center console, or on the remote key. The position of the trunk button varies depending on the manufacturer and model.

Remote key control is the most commonly used method for owners to open the trunk, and the method is very simple—just press the trunk opening button on the car key. Some models may not have a trunk opening button on the remote key, in which case pressing the unlock button will also unlock the trunk. Some models equipped with smart sensing keys allow you to directly open the trunk by pressing the switch on the trunk as long as the remote key is within a certain range (usually about 1 meter).

The trunk of the BMW 5 Series comes with hooks that can be used to hang small, loose items. Hanging these items not only saves space but also prevents them from scattering during sudden braking.

From a security perspective, BMW’s boot release is designed to prevent accidental or unauthorised access. Many models require the car to be unlocked before the boot button (either on the key fob or the boot lid) will function. Some high-end models, like the BMW 5 Series, also include a double-lock feature that disables all external access, including the boot release, for added theft protection.

The BMW trunk button, commonly referred to as the boot release, is typically located in one of three places: on the key fob, inside the driver’s door panel, or beneath the rear badge on the boot lid. The exact position depends on the model and year. For example, newer models like the BMW iX often feature a touch-sensitive area under the rear badge, while older models may have a physical button near the driver’s seat.

If you’re struggling to locate it, here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Check the key fob – most BMW key fobs have a dedicated boot release button, usually marked with an open boot symbol.
  2. Look inside the driver’s door – some models have a button near the door handle or within the storage compartment.
  3. Inspect the boot lid – newer BMWs have a touch-sensitive area beneath the rear badge. Lightly press or swipe to open.

If the boot doesn’t open, ensure the car is unlocked. Some models disable the boot release when locked for security. If the issue persists, consult the owner’s manual or visit a BMW dealership for assistance.
