The BMW 3 Series has undergone several updates since its debut in 1975, with each generation typically lasting around 6-7 years before a major redesign. The current model (G20 generation) launched in 2018, with a mid-cycle refresh (LCI) in 2022 featuring updated styling, tech, and mild-hybrid options.

Key BMW 3 Series update milestones:

  1. E21 (1975-1983): The original 3 Series, rear-wheel drive, available as a 2-door saloon.
  2. E30 (1982-1994): Introduced a 4-door saloon and estate, plus the first M3 (1986).
  3. E36 (1990-2000): More rounded design, first 3 Series coupé and convertible.
  4. E46 (1998-2006): Improved build quality, introduced the M3 CSL (2003).
  5. E90 (2005-2013): Sharper styling, first turbocharged engines (N54).
  6. F30 (2012-2019): Lighter, more efficient, with optional xDrive.
  7. G20 (2018-present): Latest generation, with 48V mild-hybrid tech from 2022.

Expect the next full redesign around 2025-2026, based on BMW’s typical cycle.

From a buyer’s perspective, the 3 Series updates roughly every 3 years with minor tweaks (new colours, tech) and every 6-7 years with a full redesign. The 2022 LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) brought sharper headlights, a larger infotainment screen, and mild-hybrid engines. If you’re buying used, post-LCI models (late 2022 onwards) offer the best tech, but pre-LCI (2018-2021) may be better value.
