The Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E300 are both premium executive saloons, but the better choice depends on priorities. The A6 excels in technology and driving dynamics, while the E300 offers superior comfort and refinement.

For driving enthusiasts, the A6’s quattro all-wheel-drive system and sharper chassis tuning provide a more engaging experience. The Virtual Cockpit and MMI infotainment are intuitive, with crisp graphics. The E300, however, has a plusher ride, thanks to its air suspension (optional on higher trims), and the MBUX system includes augmented reality navigation.

In terms of efficiency, the A6’s mild-hybrid 45 TFSI returns around 40 mpg, while the E300’s 2.0-litre petrol averages 35-38 mpg. The E300’s cabin materials feel more opulent, with extensive leather and wood trim, whereas the A6 leans toward minimalist design.

Safety is strong in both, with adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, and autonomous emergency braking standard. The E300 includes more driver-assistance features as standard, but the A6’s optional Tour Pack adds similar tech.

Resale values are comparable, though Mercedes traditionally holds a slight edge. For tech-focused buyers who enjoy driving, the A6 is ideal. Those prioritising comfort and prestige may prefer the E300.

The Audi A6 and Mercedes E300 each have their merits.

  1. Exterior Design

The Mercedes E300 features a signature family design with refined, flowing lines that showcase S-Class quality; the Audi A6 incorporates contemporary elements with a pronounced waistline running front to rear.

  1. Interior Design

The E300 sports geometric-pattern aluminium trim paired with black upholstery and brown leather seats; the A6's interior is more conservative, with extensive brown woodgrain trim emphasising its executive character.

  1. Specifications

The E300 focuses on technological and driver-oriented features; the A6 prioritises rear passenger considerations.

Audi A6 Specification Overview:

Bi-xenon headlights; automatic headlight washers; dynamic headlight range adjustment come as standard. Luxury additions include Nappa leather steering wheel and seats; heated seats; woodgrain inserts; electric rear sunblind; BOSE sound system.

Technical enhancements feature memory function for front seats and mirrors; auto-dimming rearview mirror; front/rear parking sensors; cruise control; speed-sensitive power steering. The sports package adds front sports seats; multifunction sports steering wheel with paddle shifters; 215/55/R16Y tyres; 7JX16 6-spoke alloy wheels; 'Sporty' badging.

The executive package notably includes a fold-out rear centre console table; dual DVD/TV screens mounted behind front headrests; and a minibar compartment with cooling box and champagne flute holders.

From a reliability standpoint, Mercedes has a slight edge over Audi in long-term surveys, but both are well-built. The E300’s 2.0-litre engine has proven durable, while the A6’s mild-hybrid system adds complexity. Maintenance costs are similar, though Audi’s service plans are often more flexible. If keeping the car beyond warranty, the E300 may be the safer bet.
