Description

Help our patients with transportation to the hospice.

Why we need you:

Our Day Therapy service cares for patients and families in a wide range of ways to enhance quality of life, promote independence and build self confidence.

The service offers care for adults who are living with a life-limiting illness. This includes conditions such as respiratory disease, heart disease, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and end stage dementia – as well as cancer.

Some of our patients would have no means of getting to the Hospice to access our beneficial services, so we need your help to provide transport for patients who have no other means of transportation.

What you will be doing:

Collect patients from their own home and bring them in your car to St Clare Hospice for Day Therapy, and then take them home again at the end of the day.

As well as bringing the patient you may be required to carry light loads in your vehicle such as hand bags or walking sticks.

Due to their conditions some patients need to carry oxygen cylinders with them. You would be asked whether you would be happy to transport patients with this requirement.

You would be expected to make polite conversation with patients on the journey, if they wish to.

You would need to pass on any concerns you had about a patient’s condition to Hospice staff without delay.

What skills / experience / personal qualities you will need:

• Volunteer drivers must be 25 years or older with at least five years driving experience.
• You must have access to your own vehicle and have appropriate tax, insurance and MOT for that vehicle.
• You will need to be a safe driver.
• Sensitive to the needs and concerns of people who have life-limiting conditions and those of their carers. Accessing support from the Day Therapy team as required.
• Comfortable making conversation with patients, if they wish to.
• Able to listen to the concerns of patients, reporting back to relevant Hospice staff as required.
• Non-judgmental – if patients give their views on things you must remain impartial
• To adhere to relevant St Clare policies and procedures such as the Volunteers Driving Patients Using Their Own Vehicle Procedure. Must be able to understand and maintain boundaries outlined.
• To maintain confidentiality, volunteer drivers are not expected to discuss any patients with anyone other than hospice staff at any time.

How much time you will be asked to commit:

• Day Therapy sessions run Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 / 10:30am until 3pm.
• We also have some Group Therapy sessions which run various days from 1:30-3:30pm.

We would ask that you were available at least one day a week to transport patient(s) at the times outlined above.

You would need to be available in the morning to bring the patient in and then again in the afternoon to take them home.

Patients access Day Therapy sessions once a week for either 6 or 12 weeks. For continuity we prefer to arrange for you to collect the same patient throughout their Day Therapy attendance.

There will be some times when we don’t have a patient in your area who requires transport. So you would be contacted about your availability as and when required.

What support you will be given:

• Our Day Therapy Administrator will make all arrangements with you to collect patients.
• All patients are assessed by Hospice staff before you transport them.
• You will receive information / training relevant to the role.
• You will have access to support meetings with Day Therapy staff, either one-to-one or in a group.

What benefits you can expect:

• You are entitled to reimbursement of incurred mileage.
• Become part of a passionate and supportive team.
• Help make a real difference to people living with a life-limiting illness
• Gain new experiences and develop skills and confidence.
• Meet new people.
• Spend your time doing something that is worthwhile and rewarding
• Day to day support from a designated member of staff

Where you will be based:

St Clare Hospice services covers the whole of West Essex plus the border of East Hertfordshire. You will be collecting people from your area and bringing them to
St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood near Harlow, Essex, CM17 9JX
