Description

This fine and rare old fiddle needs a new home as unfortunately I haven't found as much time for practice over the last few years as I would like (you could say none at all...) and an instrument as nice as this deserves to be played. I'm also including a sturdy German bow (I'm afraid I cant find the makers details), a spare bow and a Stentor case in the price.

The violin was made by John Young of Aberdeen, Scotland (b.1811, d.1866) in the 1830s/40s and aside from the repair to the face of the instrument (which was carried out a long time before it found it's way into my hands and has never caused any issue) it's in good condition for it's age. The tone is currently pure, clean and bright which would make it perfect for advanced students, playing at ceilidhs, any professional work where you need to be mic'd up or just to add to a collection of beautiful old Scottish fiddles! I should also make it explicit that I haven't played this violin for several years. So, like all instruments that haven't seen much use, you'll need to play it in a bit. After which I would expect the sound to open up some more, especially in the low register.

I hope this instrument finds it's way into the hands of someone who will make better use of it than I have and if you think that might be you then maybe this little piece of information might be of interest to you! Aside from being a well regarded violin maker John Young was one of three musical brothers and one of his younger brothers, James (who was the Leader at the Theatre Royal, Aberdeen), wrote a strathspey that was popular at the time called "The Brig O' Dee" (which you can find easily on Aberdeen university's website via your preferred search engine!). So, maybe you could celebrate your purchase by playing one of his family's tunes on your new fiddle... I would do it myself but I don't think you'd thank me for it!
