Wolverhampton, West Midlands
£139,727.58
Description
An exceptional pair of exquisitely made original 6th Century Byzantine 22K Gold and Fine Cabochon Garnet earrings in excellent wearable condition.
These astonishing earrings are a large original pair dating to the early part of the Byzantine era. Designed with an almost lace like quality each fine section of gold wire is perfectly made. On the edges of the earrings there are pyramids made in the finest possible granulation you could imagine. The ancient gold has a luxurious bloom which is magnificent. The delicate gold wires have been joined without the use of solder but rather verdigris to change the melting point where it has been applied. This technique was lost for about fifteen hundred years until it was rediscovered from translations in ancient writings. The skill to make these luxurious earrings is mind blowing as is the artistry of the goldsmith who made them.
They are in excellent condition with beautiful patina. The earrings were designed to rarely or never be removed the gold wires of the earring fittings twist around each other to secure them. For this reason contemporary solid 18K gold hooks have been gently attached without any solder so they can securely and comfortably be worn.
Each 22K gold ancient earring measures 1 9/16" long by 1 3/8" wide (40.5mm x 35.0mm and 40.0mm x34.5mm).
With the hooks they measure 2 1/4" long approximately (57mm).
Together the pair weigh 15.68 grams. They are comfortable to wear.
These amazing earrings are an exceptionally special pair which would make the perfect addition to any collection of rare antique jewelry.
A full certificate of authenticity and appraisal will accompany the earrings.
They will be sent in a presentation box ready for gifting.
