AKAI 4000D reel top reel tape player/recorder - Japan - Vintage

Only selling due to house downsizing.
AS WITH ANY REEL TO REEL, THIS SHOULD BE SERVICED ANNUALY, NO MATTER HOW MUCH OR LITTLE USE IT HAS HAD.

The machine powers on, REW and FF are working. Right hub sounds a little noisy. have not been able to test it with tape through a Hi Fi system. Sold as seen.

The 4000D deck succeeded the very similar 3000D model of 1968 but had an improved upper frequency response at 3¾ ips (an extra 2kHz) and some minor cosmetic alterations.
Tape decks (with no internal power amplifiers or speakers) were just starting to gain popularity (although they had been around since the early sixties). As more people began to own hi-fi equipment, tape recorder buyers could opt to dispense with large, heavy machines carrying internal amplifiers and speakers, neither
of which could ever match the quality standards of external equipment, and save substantial amounts of money with the new scaled-down record/playback decks.
This was an economy deck but with a performance to match and even exceed professional machines of a few years earlier.
Speed change was via a slip-on capstan sleeve and a rocker-type equalization switch – clumsy but economical.
