Description
HMS Indefatigable (R10) was a World War II British aircraft carrier.
The Illustrious class was a class of aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy that included some of the most important British warships in the Second World War.
It was part of the British Pacific Fleet at the end of 1944, where it targeted Japanese-controlled oil refineries in Sumatra. The ship then joined American forces in March 1945 as they prepared to invade the island of Okinawa, Japan, as part of Operation Iceberg.
On April 1, 1945, the Indefatigable became the first British carrier to be hit by a kamikaze attack.Â
Thankfully the bomb it carried did not detonate and this limited casualties to 21 men killed and 27 wounded. The ship's armored deck minimized damage, and the flight deck was back in operation thirty minutes later.
After the ceasefire, Indefatigable's aircraft flew reconnaissance missions looking for Allied prisoners of war, dropping supplies to them as they were located.
Following the end of hostilities it visited various ports including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa & Malta.
The vessel was decommissioned in 1954 and sold for scrap the following year.
(The plaque on the picture was personalised for one of the sailors who served on the ship (E D Bates). This could probably be taken out and replaced for your own requirements).
The picture is in very good condition and the frame is fair. The backing could do with repairing if it’s not being reframed.
