Description

Black with maroon Vynide upholstery. I have owned it since 1974 and it served for many years as my daily transport. In the 1980s I had it fitted with a Triumph 1296cc OHV engine to enable it to keep up with modern traffic; a brake servo to help it stop; a stainless steel exhaust system, and flashing as well as semaphore indicators. Last year I spent over £4,300 on having the engine overhauled; a new wiring loom fitted; all the brake cylinders and hoses replaced; structural welding done to both sills (its first ever welding); four new tyres and battery fitted, and leaky oil seals replaced.

To get the car back to Concours condition, the following would be required: Repair of minor blemishes to the bodywork; beautifying the engine compartment; replacing some of the sealing rubbers; re-chroming the rear bumper; replacing the headlining and carpets, and replacing the springs in the base of the driver’s seat. I had planned to do all this as a retirement project, but an unforeseen and major change of plan (emigration) means that I must now part with it after 51 years of ownership.

Once the restoration is complete it should prove an eminently practical classic for regular use. As an ‘historic vehicle’ it is exempt from road tax, does not have to be MOT’d, is cheap to insure and is even exempt from clean air zone charges. Parts for the replacement engine are easy to obtain, as are parts for the brakes (similar to Morris 1000) and for the electrics (standard Lucas parts)

Comparatively few Mayflowers were built and they are now rare – perhaps not many more than 150 on the road worldwide. They have an enthusiastic members’ club with a large stock of parts, both new and second-hand, and an excellent and informative magazine.

I can supply further photos if required and the car can, of course, be inspected. It is near Clevedon, Somerset, about 9 miles South of Bristol and near junctions 19 and 20 of the M5.

Available by separate negotiation are nearly all the parts you would need to complete its restoration, many of them extremely rare, including an almost complete set of reproduction sealing rubbers for windows, doors, bonnet and boot, including a set of four quarter-light rubbers, two new over-riders, reproduction interior door-handles, Vynide for the interior trim, moquette for the front seat-backs, as well as several period accessories, such as a badge-bar and wing-mirrors.
