Description

Title: Those WERE the Days; This publication, is written by me describing and illustrating my trainspotting exploits between 1959 and 1968. A unique appraisal of one person's activities in the halcyon period up to that fateful day, 4th August 1968.,when steam finished on British Railways. I travelled extensively all over the UK, often away every 2-3 weeks, sometimes on organised tours such as with the Middleton Mob, PK Tours, or our own Grammar School Club trips. sometimes, alone sometimes with friends. The trips ranged from local line-siding at Hitchin, Bedford, Cambridge, Bletchley and other nearby locations, to major 4-5 day tours right up into Scotland. numerous trips to the North-west areas as well. On one such trip well over 2,000 steam engines were noted down, it was quite possible to see 500+ on a day trip to London in those days.

I travelled by various means; coaches in the main, mini-bus, train, motorbike, bicycle, even ferries! and often hitchhiked . There are numerous humorous stories attached to the trips, such as hitching a lift on a 9F right into the shed I was visiting! Our coach catching fire on the M1, a contretemps with 53 Bullocks, sleeping in the open air, run-ins with shed Foremen, the Castleford 'snow' incident, trouble at School with a BR Inspector and many more.

In doing these trips I made over 600 visits to BR sheds Works and Scrapyards, and noted down over 21,000 engines. All this is detailed in the Appendixes at the rear of the book.

There are over 100 historic and previously unpublished Black & White photos illustrated throughout the book

From the original print runs, which went to three reprints, I have just 60 copies left which I now need to dispose of. They are all brand new and still in the boxes as delivered to me by the printers. My circumstances have changed hence the reason to off-load these copies.

Please note; you can collect from my address in Poulton-le-Fylde
