Tokai Jazz (Sound) Bass Lined Fretless (MIJ circa. 1984)

Tokai Jazz Sound bass fretless (original fretless) is in really good condition considering this bass is over 35 years old! Check online – these early ‘80’s basses and guitars from Tokai are exceptional quality, sometimes referred to as the ‘lawsuit’ era of Japanese guitar and bass building due to the quality of their instruments. The serial number on this one (L14713) is of particular interest and signifies it was built around 1984 and is based on a 1960-64 Fender Jazz Bass – the pre CBS era.

Apparently, Tokai imported early Fender guitars and basses in the late seventies and used them as templates for their own. The addition of Japanese quality means that these early Tokais are therefore really close to the original Fenders. 1982-84 is the era of highly regarded instruments from Tokai. This one has a beautiful sound and look. Black body in overall good condition with some minor wear and slight buckle-rash to the rear of the body. The rosewood lined fretless neck is in excellent condition, and it is currently strung with new flatwound strings. The neck is nice and slim, and this bass is a joy to play, it is a nice lightweight and nicely balanced.

The only reason I’m selling is that I have another same-era Tokai fretless, very similar to this one, and I have to admit that one is enough for me as I don’t really do them justice! If it was cost-effective I would get frets installed on this one, it's so nice. Incidentally I also have 3 fretted, early 80’s Tokai Jazz Sound basses and all of them are superb – the quality of these instruments is amazing. Grab a piece of history with this almost 40-year old bass!

Would prefer cash on collection as I no longer have a box up to ship it in.Though I do have a used Hiscox case I could send it in for an extra £30 for the case.
