Guitar Lessons

Description

With 30 years playing and 15 years teaching experience I pride myself on helping develop guitarists who not only play songs/riffs/solos but also sound good doing so, with the skills and knowledge to play in bands/ensembles, perform live and continue to improve their own playing.

I teach all levels from beginners upwards, so if you have never picked up a musical instrument but want to give the guitar a go then I'd be very happy to get you started.

Alternatively, you may want to move your playing to the next level. Maybe tidy up your technique, get your teeth into some face-melting solos, finally get to know theory or even learn to read music. Maybe you just need someone else who can give you some extra guidance and direction.

I also tutor in two secondary schools and a prep (primary) school and have a lot of experience preparing both school and private students for GCSE performance exams with the majority receiving A and A*s for performance.

I am based in South Manchester but am also experienced in teaching via Skype/Zoom/Meet so can teach anyone irrespective of location.
I am a patient and friendly tutor but also not afraid of giving real constructive criticism too. I want to encourage but don't believe anyone's goals are well-served by false praised. However any constructive criticism is always coupled with an explanation and a strategy for improvement.

I offer a discounted price for weekday daytime lessons (ie. a lesson that ends before 4pm). I have offers on block bookings and my first lesson is half price.
I charge £25 per 1 hour lesson evenings and weekends, and £22 per hour daytimes, but can also do shorter lessons.
There is much more thorough information on lessons and pricing on my website:

Please note: Availability Late 2021/early 2022
Sorry but I currently have no free evening or weekend slots for new students.
For daytimes lessons, before Feb 2022 the only slots I have are a couple on a Monday. However from Feb 2022 I’m going to have a lot of availability on other weekday daytimes too (I currently look after my daughter most days and she’s going into nursery then).
Currently all my lessons are taking place online via Skype/Zoom etc I will be reviewing this in Feb/Mar 2022 and will most likely be offering face-to-face lessons again. If so, I will ask all students to be masked (as well as me) My teaching office is small and I have vulnerable family members.

Rob is so good at listening to what you really want from your lessons and devising a structured (but flexible enough) route to lead you there. He's also a very insightful teacher who's clearly reflected a lot on the learning journey. He knows what exercises/rep will develop the technique you need to get you where you want to go.

Love having lessons with Rob! He is really patient, even when I don't practise, and makes lessons lots of fun. He's encouraging and I like the way lessons are structured to help drive progress. My technique is really getting there thanks to all his help!

As an older student new to the world of guitar Rob's teaching is excellent. I've had lessons with Rob for a couple of years now, and he really nails the core fundamentals/thinking early on. Guitar isn't easy instrument to learn and Rob's ability to translate the more complex elements into digestible chunks is superb! Rob is also focused on getting the best out of you as a student, providing various knowledgeable tips and guidance to improve your playing. Helping you take a self-learnt riff that sounds sloppy, out of time and disjointed, to something that sounds purposeful and flowing.

I cannot recommend Rob enough. I had previously been playing guitar for about a year and had informal lessons but wasn't really getting anywhere. Rob started at the very beginning, took the time to find out what music I listened to and encorporated it into the lessons. Rob is friendly, patient and encouraging without being pushy which really makes you want to practise and improve. Since having lessons with Rob my guitar playing, music reading and knowledge of music theory has improved significantly and I would recommend Rob to guitar players of all abilities.

I have been having lessons with Rob for a couple of years (most of which has been via video) and have made more progress in this time than 10+ years of playing before that. Rob’s method is meticulous, progressively challenging, and covers a good mix of technique, theory, songs and musicianship. As a teacher Rob is patient and is able to explain difficult concepts in simple terms, and has a passion for music and teaching which makes lessons enjoyable. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Rob, and particularly to anyone (like me) who was unsure of where to go next and wanted to get their enthusiasm for the guitar back.
