The Last Post - Park Wood Residents Association
.
Although I had originally come from Canterbury, I had lived in Whitstable since I left school up until I met Ann and we then left to live in Dumfries. Ann, however, was born in Maidstone. Her mother and sister both also live in Maidstone (yes, Shortlands Green & Bethersden Court, you may have heard of them).
.
Ann and I moved to Park Wood, Maidstone from Maidstone Road, Marden two and a half years ago. We lived in Marden for nearly 20 years.
Having recovered from a stroke and also completed a full course of radiotherapy, and having spent much of our time making our garden into somewhere we could both relax in and enjoy we then decided to turn some of our attention towards the new community we now lived in.
.
That's when we had a flyer posted through our door informing us of the Park Wood Residents Association's meeting, so we both decided to attend and see what went on and see if we could help to make a difference to “Park Wood” as a neighbourhood. It was at that meeting (05/09/2017) that it became obvious to us there was much to be done. The Finances and Restructuring items mentioned were a bit of a clue here.
When it came to item 6) 'any other business' on the agenda Sue Pritchard asked for someone to take over the PWRA Facebook page, and that's how I got the job.
It was at that same meeting that it came to my attention that MBC were to close Heather House and also hoped to close the RBLI Club.
.
We were on holiday and therefore unable to attend the AGM meeting of 05/10/2017. Item 3) 'The Treasurers report' I would have expected an audited set of accounts to be presented at an AGM, but we have no details of any auditors being appointed. A simple statement of the bank account balance does little to suggest the association is being run as it should be.
.
A simple internet search of the term “start a residents association” will return a wealth of information which could be used to get PWRA on the right tracks. It is possible to promote Park Wood as it is now, not as it was in the 1950's and 1960's, but with committee members continuing to refer to Wallis Avenue and the roads off it as 'The Estate' what chance is there? Some people need to get out more.
.
With a little more vision and a more progressive approach, totally independent of KCC, MBC and Fusion HLC, and PWRA could achieve anything they set out to do, for and with the help and support of the community of Park Wood.
.
It's time for Ann and I to step down and move on to other things. We wish all at PWRA 'all the best' for the future of Park Wood.
