Antique Carved Oak Settle Bench Tavern Seat

Newton Abbot, Devon £695.00

This is an unusual oak settle which dates to the early part of the 19th century, a nicely aged antique piece which will suit a rustic setting.

The settle looks to have been made originally as part of the fixtures and fittings of the house that it came from, the back would certainly suggest this as it isn't finished or decorative in any way.

It has a very evocative look, I can almost imagine it in the bows of an old ship.

The bench has a curved back rest and seat but the back is virtually level so that it can be sat fairly squarely against a wall.

The back rest and lower panels are ornately carved and feature carved lozenges and circles enclosing flowers. The lower frame has cut outs above the upper panels which lends us to think it may be made from reclaimed oak or that it was originally part of another piece of furniture.

The armrests sit on nicely turned supports and to the front the bench sits on flat feet.

The wood is a beautiful golden oak colour and has a varnished finish with many small marks, knocks and repairs, it has been cleaned and waxed for protection.

The condition is good and structurally it is very solid, but there are a lot of cosmetic marks and knocks here and there as you would expect to find on a piece of its age. There are various scratches and marks to the seat and small repairs and cracks to the wood.

Generally it is quite a rustic and well aged looking piece, its history being evident in the many marks and knocks that cover its surface.
