“The Tate Gallery, London, comprises the national collections of British painting and modern painting and sculpture. This anthology of 201 illustrations, 81 of which are in colour, includes the most important works from each collection. Turner is particularly strongly represented, but other leading British artists, Hogarth Gainsborough, Stubbs, Blake and the Pre-Raphaelites, are all illustrated, as is the full range of British painting from the 16th to the 20th centuries. From the modern collection come masterpieces by the Impressionists, Cezanne Picasso, Matisse, Giacometti and Henry Moore, and the selection comes right up to the art of the present-day[*] in Britain, Europe and the United States, giving a picture of the rich diversity of contemporary trends in sculpture as well as painting.
The plates have been selected by Norman Reid, Director of the Tate Gallery since 1964[**]. He has also written the brief introduction.”
* this relates to 1974.
** until 1979.
