Description

A 1988 book, published by Pavilion Books Ltd, in association with The British Library. This book is in good condition with its dust cover. It weighs 1325g and measures 31cm x 21cm x 2.5cm. Collection or delivery.

The introduction to this book is written by Nigel Nicolson and the county commentaries are by Alasdair Hawkyard. The book is a compendium of British maps originally prepared by cartographer John Speed, for “The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine”, in 1611-12.

“In this new edition, taken from a rare contemporary coloured version in the British Library, all sixty-seven maps are faithfully reproduced in full colour. In his eloquent introduction, Nigel Nicolson presents a biography of Speed, outlining the craft of contemporary map-making and putting Speed’s atlas into context. Alasdair Hawkyard then describes the topographical features and other intriguing aspects of the maps and the prevailing social conditions of each county, thereby enabling the reader to identify not only the ways in which the landscape of Britain has been dramatically transformed during the past four centuries but also the social changes that came about as a direct result.”
