Description

This is a great avant-garde classic lightweight full-suspension ATB, the bike that introduced a completely new type of offroad machine.

This carbon-fibre frame originated the Y-frame that was immediately copied (very badly) by loads of other manufacturers. It is a revolutionary bike, fun to ride, designed and manufactured in the USA, very collectable. The Trek Y-series has been named several times as 'one of the best bicycles of all time'.

It's a fantastic bike, and I love it, but I never get to ride it, and I need the space

It's in good condition, no cracks, no dents, no delamination of the carbon fibre fuselage

Some scuffs and marks from use (never crashed), no damage to the carbon fibre

Well-maintained, recently serviced, everything working well

Size L, bicycle weight just over 10kg

I'm a bit over 6'1, and I'm not cramped on it

[The XL size of this bike is the same frame, with a longer stem]

Rockshox Judy XC Long Travel magnesium forks

Rockshox air/oil rear shock with rebound/lockout adjustment

100% Trek OCLV carbon fuselage (Optimized Compaction Low Void)

6061 T6 aluminium subframe

Deore crankset 42/32/22T

Deore XT V-brakes

Deore XT rear hub

System 3 oversize front hub

Swami USA metal matrix composite rims

Shimano 8-spd 11-30T rear cluster

Deore front mech

SRAM carbon fibre rear mech

Age-appropriate SPD M747 pedals

Bontrager Race Lite handlebars

Bontrager System stem with offset clamp

Servo Wave two-finger brakes (my favourite!)

Rare translucent ESP 900 X-Ray shifters

ESP soft bar grips

Selling with bar-ends (not fitted), choice of road or dirt tyres

This machine is a classic full-suspension MTB with a carbon monocoque construction and an aluminium unified rear triangle

It has good handling, especially in the dirt and it doesn't bob under pedalling, so it's decent on the flat and climbs well. I can't say how good it is for real downhilling as I've never used it for that. Probably the reason why it has survived.

The Y-series was Trek's top off-road bike when it was introduced, and sold for $3,200. They were very rare in Europe in 1996, and are even rarer now.

The press pic is from July 1996 edition of Popular Mechanics. The Y33 (same frame and suspension as Y22) came top for all round performance 'if money were no object' in a test of 5 top-range bikes.

The jump picture is a rider in a park specifically disproving the idea that this frame is fragile.

The Trek Y-series is also famous for being the upgrade bike issued to the stars of the US TV police series 'Pacific Blue' at the start of its second season. Luckily mine doesn't have the awful (but flashy) Spinergy wheels. This bike is stock, many Y-series bikes were extensively customised, not always for the better.

I love this bike, but I've hardly ridden it in 12 months, and it hasn't seen dirt in several years. It deserves a more active life.

Apart from the bar-ends there must be a few extra bits and pieces I can throw in

I have various stuff available, so please mention exactly what you are interested in when you contact me, thanks

If you can see this advert, then I still have this bike
