Could you help build and run a business?

Are you looking for that first big break?

This isn’t a “normal job” - I’m looking for a trainee with entrepreneurial flair and front of house hospitality industry experience - and it will be damned hard work.

With training, you must be capable of running and growing the business.

Please read to the end of this information to understand the full requirements, as it will not be suitable for the majority of people and your application will be discarded if it doesn’t comply.

The person I’m looking for will be ambitious, confident, but not cocky, a self-starter, who has the drive and determination to help us grow our business.

However, it is ESSENTIAL you have some Hospitality experience and the ability to manage and motivate a team.

If you have a desire to get into business, but possibly not got the resources, this could be the opportunity you’ve been dreaming of.

Qualifications and skills

Skills you will need -

For the most part, the skills can be learned. Character and attitude are much harder to build, so you are likely to have most of the right character attributes already. You will be pretty smart, good at Maths and English, but not necessarily have gone to university.   Common sense is far more important than a degree, (and a lot rarer).

Street-smarts are more important than degree qualifications.

EQ – Emotional Intelligence, is more important than IQ or Intellectual Intelligence.

You might come from an entrepreneurial family already, giving you the right “mindset”.  Possibly you even grew up “in the shop” or helping your self-employed parents in their business when you were young (or maybe still are).

While the age is open, you are likely to have at least 2 years work experience, (unless you really are exceptional). However, you will have shown your ability and had some level of promotion to a supervisory or management role already and possess a very strong work ethic. You will be the type of character who enjoys work and thrives on challenges.

You won’t be a job hopper and will have a reasonably good job record, (show and notate any gaps -  all references will be checked).

You may even have “had a go” at or been in a small business yourself, possibly made a few mistakes, maybe even gone broke and need to start again – that’s all good experience. It could be anything from a market stall, café, bar, sandwich shop, to an internet business.

More than likely, you’ve worked a part time job in your youth.  You have been self-reliant for your “spends” and been proud of your ability to stand on your own feet.

Overall, you are seriously ambitious – but the quietly determined type - not the shallow, “I want to be a celebrity” ambition.

You are really determined to make something of your life. You have an attitude that you will “get it done, whatever it takes” – not, “well, if everything goes well and I don’t have to work too hard,  it should be ok”.

You will have great social skills, able to build rapport & respect with people quickly.

Nationality doesn’t matter, but your understanding and speaking of English will be perfect.

You will also be someone who seizes the opportunity – “things come to those who wait – but only what’s left by those who strive”.

It’s probably best to say what we’re NOT looking for first -

I’m not looking for someone who just wants a job, a clock watcher, anyone with a chip on their shoulder, anyone who is not good with people or of a miserable disposition, (business is hard work, but we all want to work with happy people!).

I’m not looking for a prima donna, who thinks menial tasks are beneath them. This is a, “the buck stops here” role, where you lead by example.  You are quite prepared to do any task you would as others to do.

What we ARE looking for -

You could be young, but you will be experienced enough in life to realise, success won’t happen overnight and that the first 12 months will require solid focus and may be extremely grueling, relentless hard work.

You can focus on the task and see it through.

While we believe entrepreneurs can be made, not just born, we know from experience, they are a very, very rare breed. 95% of people “talk a great talk”, but can’t “walk a great walk”.  But, if you’ve got the basics, (which frankly, is mainly having the right mindset - determination, resilience and a “no matter what” focus), we’ll help you build on these attributes.

The basics are all about character. You will need incredible stamina, determination and sheer force of personality to see things through to completion, (80% of people wouldn’t even bother reading this far, never mind doing the job). You must be able to shrug off set-backs, partial failures and crisis, and plough on. You won’t stop till the job is done. You will be self-confident, but not egotistic - it won’t be hollow bravado. When you say you can or will do something, you know you have the inner strength to see it through.

It isn’t about being the fastest or the strongest and definitely not the smartest – but 95% of people would give up before you would. You will be the one that proves it can be done when everyone else has given up, sure that it can’t. It just isn’t in your nature to give up, not turn up or quit.

When you are given a difficult challenge, you don’t suggest all the reasons why it won’t work. You look for ways that it can – but you’re humble & sensible enough to ask for help on the bits you don’t know.

You will need a good level of IT & computing skills to be able to use common office, business & social media software as well as EPOS and CRM and willing to learn other stuff you don’t know.

Can you do it?

In 100 words, tell us why you believe you can successfully fulfil this role and what your goals are for your life.

Please provide a minimum of two references, with email and phone contact and their relationship to you, (which will be checked).

You must be currently living around Greater Manchester or be prepared to relocate, (possible short term accommodation available). It is possible you may need to relocate to another location to grow the business.  A company vehicle will be available when you have proven yourself.

You must have a valid passport and able to freely travel without restriction. You will not be barred from entry to any western country.

You will have a valid driving license with no more than 3 points.

Responsibilities & Duties

To do the role, you will need a “sleeves rolled up, I will do anything” attitude. You will have to think and operate like an entrepreneur/owner. A team member not turned up? - do their job.  A crisis on site?  - deal with it. A job need doing before close of play today? - guess what, it’s yours. You’ll need to be able to jump into any role, even if it’s cleaning the toilets, as the cleaner hasn’t turned in or jumping in the kitchen to give the chefs a hand.

That’s what it’s like in the real world of business, so don’t be under the illusion it’s playing golf all afternoon or doing Powerpoint presentations. You will need to lead by example. If you’re a clock watcher, someone who winds down after 6 hours work or who can only get stuff done, “if everything goes to plan or there’s nothing else on telly”, then this isn’t for you.

In the real world, stuff happens and you have to cope. If that means working round the clock on the odd all-nighter, so be it.  It goes with the territory.

By definition, the hours can be long and unsocial, including weekends. You will be working hands on in a bar/restaurant/wedding venue.  You will have to help create, train and motivate a team. The idea is, once you have learned the skills needed to run a venue, you will develop to work ON the business, as much as IN the business, but you have to be able to take it to that level first.

If you have a partner or dependents, they will need to be very supportive, as initially, you will be working very hard and long hours. If they’re not supportive, it simply won’t work, so please don’t apply.  This means the role will be unsuitable for anyone with heavy home/family/pet/time constraints or commitments.

Benefits

Initially, you will be on £25k, with a planned target of £50k+, based on achieving targets and profitability share.

If you’ve seriously got the guts to take on this role, then you can literally write your own ticket.

While the base income will be salary based, plus profit share, this is a real opportunity to earn a terrific income plus, if you’ve got it, eventually get a share of the business.

You will need to be free to start work within a few weeks with no major breaks planned in the next 6 months.

To apply, send a Word doc full CV,

Please start your letter with the words “Hello Dolly” (we only want people who pay attention).

If you have one, include your Linked-In profile link.

Good luck with the application – but you know you don’t need it. You know you can get this job.
