Food Train is an award winning Scottish Charity helping frail older people who struggle to do their own grocery shopping. Our trusted, friendly volunteers provide a vital weekly food order collection, shopping and delivery service which helps older people stay healthy and independent at home and helps combat social isolation amongst them.

Food Train's Glasgow branch are currently seeking Volunteer Shoppers to volunteer any one to three mornings a week - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
(roughly 8:00am-12.00pm) to compile the grocery orders for our customers from the shopping lists provided by them.

Shoppers should have a reasonable level of literacy to allow them to read shopping lists and product information on goods ie low fat, salted, unsalted, sugar free – to identify correct products which might be important for the health and dietary requirements of an older person. They should also be able to distinguish between sizes ie 1 pint, 1 litre, 250g, 500g,1kg etc. Some of our older customers have very small kitchens and restricted storage space, so choosing the correct size is important to them.
Uniforms are provided as well as photographic ID badges after a short trial period. As they are expensive to provide, we ask our volunteers to try us out for a short while to make sure the role is right for them and that they are right for us. This is usually a period of about 4 weeks, but is often less.

We ask all volunteers to give us as much notice as possible if unable to turn up for their shift. Replacements can usually be found with advance notice but an on the day ’no-show’ can seriously affect the ability to deliver and has a real consequence on our customers, most of whom are housebound due to age related frailty, disability or ill health.

Expenses are repayable for your travel to the Food Train office or supermarkets visited.
