The difference you will make:

St Clare’s Day Therapy groups are for adults who are living with a life-limiting illness. This includes conditions such as respiratory disease, heart disease, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and end stage dementia – as well as cancer.

Patients join us for the day and have the opportunity to take part in therapeutic and creative activities, as well as the chance to meet and talk to other people with similar illnesses. The days allow patients to support each other, normalise their situation, and offers a place where they can relax whilst accessing specialist support and advice.

As part of this service we run some creative art sessions roughly once a quarter. Sessions can be led by our Occupational Therapists but we prefer to have guests come and share their skills and ideas, and offer patients new opportunities and perspectives.

If you could share your creative skills with our group for a couple of hours you could enable people to express themselves in new ways, offer a therapeutic way for them to spend their time, and maybe enable them to discover skills they never knew they had.

What you will be doing:

Sharing your artistic interests with one of our day therapy groups for a couple of hours.

Whether you like arts and crafts, flower arranging, pottery, painting, music – anything creative you can show our patients how to do we want to hear about it!

Our Occupational Therapists and our Day Therapy volunteers will be with you throughout the session to support patients to join in and get the most out of the creative session you are leading.

There will normally be about 8 people in a session, 10 maximum.

We can provide the materials for the activities if you let us know in advance what is needed.

The skills / experience / personal qualities you will need:

• You will need to be able to share a creative interest of yours with a group.
• You will be able to show people who are new to the activity how to do it.
• You will encourage people to express themselves and ‘have a go’.

The time you will be asked to commit:

Our creative arts sessions are normally scheduled for roughly once a quarter (i.e. 4 times a year).

We normally arrange 6 sessions each quarter and they usually run on a Monday or a Wednesday.

Sessions are 2 hours long and would normally be 10:30am – 12:30 pm or 1:30 – 3:30pm.

Even if you can just help us with 1 session a year that would be appreciated, but if you can help with more that would be great!

The support you will be given:

You will be fully supported by our experienced Occupational Therapists who run our Day Therapy sessions.
 They will speak to you in advance about the activity you can offer to check it would be suitable for our patients.
 They can purchase materials needed for the session
 They will be with you in the session to support people to join in and deal with any medical needs of patients.

Our experienced Day Therapy volunteers will also be on hand to help any patients who need extra support to join in.

The benefits you can expect:

• Become part of a passionate and supportive Day Therapy team.
• Help make a real difference to people living with a life-limiting illness
• Meet new people.
• Spend your time doing something that is worthwhile and rewarding
• Day to day support from experienced staff
• Travel expenses will be reimbursed when agreed in advance

Where you will be based:

St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood near Harlow, Essex, CM17 9JX
