Main Duties required of a Day Support Worker

1. To enable clients to meet their daily needs in a clean and welcoming environment

•To ensure that there is a positive and welcoming environment at O’Hanlon House
•To allocate beds and lockers in accordance with procedures
•To carry out designated cleaning and laundry duties (and any other housekeeping tasks) in a prompt and timely fashion during the shift
•To support and encourage clients to care for themselves and develop independent living skills
•To give clients information about other services where relevant
•To provide personal care this may include assisting clients with washing and dressing).
•To prompt, enable and monitor clients to manage prescribed medication, recording as appropriate
•To support clients to receive appropriate healthcare and advice

2. Carrying a caseload of clients, to assist with all areas of move-on support to clients at O’Hanlon House, in conjunction with colleagues and other agencies

•Follow the needs and support assessment process within designated time limits and to a high standard
•Work with clients to produce realistic and time-bound support plans which are reviewed on a regular basis
•Meet with clients at least weekly
•Provide support and practical assistance to clients to enable them to develop life skills
•Assist, enable and encourage clients to participate in the Activities programme in preparation for successful resettlement
•Support clients to maximise welfare benefit entitlement
•Create opportunities and enable clients to develop and widen their social, educational and leisure networks
•Work with clients to identify activities that they would like to take part in to prepare them for independence and move-on
•Promote self-advocacy and act as the client’s advocate where appropriate
•Be aware of clients’ wellbeing, safety and state of health, reporting any concerns to the day’s shift leader or on call manager
•Report any safeguarding concerns to a manager and notify all relevant agencies

3. To minimise risk to clients and other building users

•Be aware of clients’ wellbeing, safety and state of health, reporting any concerns to daily shift leader or on call manager
•To observe, appropriately challenge unhealthy practices and ensure that risky behaviour is discussed and recorded
•Clean and dispose of needles and all clinical waste according to O’Hanlon House procedures
•De-escalate difficult situations with clients
•Challenge inappropriate treatment of other staff and clients
•Perform necessary first aid within the bounds of policy and procedure
•Make use of emergency services when necessary
•Actively ensure security of the building through regular checks and monitoring of CCTV system
•To be aware of responsibilities under Oxford Homeless Pathways H&S Policy and procedures
•To carry out room checks and report concerns
•Complete accident and incident forms as required
