Purpose and Aims of the role

Aberlour have earned an excellent reputation for working with children and young people who have experienced disadvantage and trauma as a result of early childhood experiences. We pride ourselves on our child centred focus and strong commitment to the individual development of each child emotionally, socially, physically and intellectually.
Volunteers are a very important part of the healing process required to support our children and young people back in to the cycle of positive social development.
Could you spend regular time with a child, sharing a hobby or activity on a fortnightly basis? If you have a genuine interest in in the wellbeing of children and young people and live in the Inverness, Tain or Fort William area we would love to hear from you.

What will I be doing?

• Making a difference in a child or young person’s life
• Spending regular time with a child or young person
• Supporting them when difficulties arise
• Sharing an activity/hobby
• Attending activities
• Completing a diary after each visit
• Attending regular support sessions
• Contributing to service assessments through support.

What skills can I bring to this role?

• Responsible and dependable

What qualities do I need?

• To have a non-judgemental attitude and approach to working with children and young people

• To be able to treat all information in a confidential manner
• Be friendly, helpful and understanding


When will I be needed?

• Befrienders will spend a few hours each week with either a child or young person or a young parent and also attend monthly group activities and attend all Aberlour training
• As our children / young people will be at school, outings will generally take place in the evenings or at weekends
• A minimum of 1 year’s commitment is required for this role.

Our services are in Fort William, Tain and Inverness

Additional Information

Due to Health and Safety requirements you must be at least 18 years of age to undertake this volunteering role.

For all roles involving regulated work with children and/or protected adults, Aberlour will require the applicant to submit a PVG Scheme Record or a PVG Scheme Record Update application. This opportunity is subject to the completion of satisfactory references and successful registration on the PVG Scheme.
