Etiquette of Buying

It takes two to make a transaction, and polite behaviour helps oil the wheels for both buyers and sellers. We've learned from experience that the biggest concerns for many Gumtree users relate to meeting up for a viewing.

Etiquette of Buying

When it comes to buying etiquette, you could think of it a bit like a blind date. Both parties should be considerate about arrangements, make sure everyone is comfortable, and provide reassurance that they’re going to turn up.

Here are a few suggestions for buyers about making and responding to offers and messages, keeping appointments, and sticking to what’s been agreed with the seller.

Sending and responding to messages

When you message a seller, it’s helpful if any queries are as specific as possible, so they know how to respond and with what information. It’s not unusual for multiple messages to go back and forward before a deal is reached, so prompt and clear replies help move things along.

There’s nothing to stop you from making a lower offer than the advertised price. However, a bid that’s way out of the general ballpark could be annoying and a waste of the seller’s time. It’s a good idea to keep it reasonable.

Making and keeping appointments

It’s always wise to see the item you’re thinking of buying, and it shouldn’t be too difficult to make an arrangement for a time and place to suit you both. If something gets in the way, a quick email to rearrange is all it takes. Standing someone up is just plain rude.

When the price is right

Once you’ve made your offer and it’s been accepted, the haggling should stop. Trying to negotiate a new price post-deal isn’t polite. It could feel like a wind-up to the seller, who might have other offers.

When both seller and buyer treat each other with courtesy and respect, it’s unlikely that things will go wrong. You can see more practical tips on our Lifestyle Hub. Additionally, if you’ve more questions about what’s OK and what’s not, check the Code of Conduct in our Gumtree Policies.
