How to Prepare and Pack Your Device for Shipping

Selling your tech is exciting, but ensuring it arrives safely is the most important part of the journey. Follow this step-by-step guide to protect your privacy, your item, and your payout.

Step 1: Disconnect Your Accounts & Reset

Before doing anything else, you must wipe your personal data.

  • Sign Out: Log out of all personal accounts (Apple ID/iCloud, Google, Samsung, or Microsoft).
  • Remove Locks: Disable any screen locks, PINs, or biometric security.
  • Factory Reset: Perform a full factory reset to restore the device to its original settings.

💡 Why? This protects your privacy and ensures the buyer can actually use the device. Devices locked to an account cannot be processed.

Step 2: Take Proof of Condition Photos

Always take photos before and during the packing process. If the item is damaged in transit, these photos are your insurance policy. Take clear pictures of:

  • The front, back, and all sides of the device.
  • The screen turned on (proving it works).
  • The Serial Number or IMEI code.
  • The device placed safely inside the box.
  • The final, sealed package with the shipping label visible.

Step 3: Pack Your Item Securely

Electronics are fragile. Standard envelopes will not cut it.

  • The Box: Use a sturdy, rigid cardboard box.
  • Protection: Wrap the device generously in bubble wrap or thick protective foam.
  • The Shake Test: Fill any empty space with packing peanuts or crumpled paper. If you shake the box and feel the item moving, it needs more padding.
  • Extras: Don’t forget to include any chargers, cables, or accessories promised in your Ad.

⚠️ Important: Poor packaging may lead to rejection of any compensation in case of damage during transit.

Step 4: Ship It Right

  • Use Our Label: Always use the official shipping label provided by Gumtree.
  • Don’t Delay: Drop off your parcel within the recommended timeframe to keep your buyer happy.
  • Get Proof:Always ask for a proof of postage receipt at the drop-off point. Keep this until the buyer receives the item and you are paid.
