At Gumtree, we have taken extra measures to try to ensure that all pets rehomed on our site are treated with their welfare in mind.
Working with PAAG
One important step in that process is ensuring that we meet the 26 minimum standards set out by PAAG (Pet Advertising Advisory Group) for websites offering pets for sale via online adverts. These guidelines help ensure that safety standards are adhered to, and more animals are treated with respect and care.
Educating on animal welfare
Even though precautions have been taken, it is still important to be cautious when rehoming pets.
That’s why some of the UK’s top animal welfare organisations, veterinary and industry bodies who make up the PAAG have united to help educate the public on spotting Ads posted by dishonest pet sellers. Their advice on how to safely buy a pet can be found here. Our Pets category on the lifestyle hub also has a wide range of breed guides and safety advice.
Paying to list an animal
In addition to working with PAAG, a paywall was introduced in 2018 and all users wishing to rehome their pet is charged a listing fee. We do this to discourage the casual trading of animals and deter unscrupulous operators from using our website.
Posting a pet listing on Gumtree
Our Pets category is subject to additional human and automated moderation. All Ads posted in this category are also required to adhere to the pet category policies outlined here. There are also a number of animals we do not allow to be rehomed on our platform.
Gumtree will not hesitate to remove any ad that does not comply with our strict posting policies. Users suspected of poor animal welfare will be banned.
