How do secure payments on Gumtree work?
Making or receiving secure payments on Gumtree couldn’t be simpler. With just two steps, you’ll be able to buy or sell a car easily and conveniently.
Step 1 – Set up secure payments
To make or receive payment on Gumtree, you’ll need to verify your ID and bank details through our payment provider, Online Payment Platform (OPP). You are required to use a UK or EU bank account that is registered in your name.
Step 2 – Make or receive open banking payments
Sellers can opt in to Online Payment Platform (OPP) when they post an ad, and buyers can see which sellers offer it by clicking the ‘Accepts secure payments’ badge. Payments are made directly from your bank account, making the process simpler and safer for you.

Are there any fees or exclusions with secure payments?
At the moment, secure payments on Gumtree are only available to private buyers and sellers in the Cars category, creating added security for this type of transaction. Please note that our payment provider, Online Payment Platform (OPP), charges a 0.7% fee to cover the payment transfer, payment support, documentation checks, and proof of purchase.

The following six banks will be supported by Online Payment Platform (OPP) for payments on Gumtree:
Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, Nationwide, NatWest and Santander

Online Payment Platform (OPP) is our payment partner. They are a regulated payment service provider that specialises in payments on marketplaces. What Gumtree purchases can I make using Open Banking?
Open Banking is currently available in the Cars category, and payments can only be made between private car buyers and sellers.
How do I begin using Open Banking payments on Gumtree?
Sellers
As a private seller you will be invited to accept Open Banking payments when you post an ad – simply follow the steps provided. Alternatively, sellers can set up payments any time by visiting the ‘My details’ section of their account and following the instructions to validate their ID and bank details.
Buyers
Buyers can click the ‘Accepts secure payments’ badge to see which private sellers offer Open Banking. Buyers can sign up for Open Banking via the ‘My details’ section of their account and submitting their ID for validation, or through messaging sellers who accept secure payments.

Why do I need to verify my ID to set up secure payments?
All buyers and sellers who want to pay securely on Gumtree will need to have a valid form of ID verified by our payment provider Online Payment Platform (OPP). This is to ensure that all transactions take place between verified buyers and sellers. Please note that verification can take up to 1 working day.
What documents can I use to verify my ID?
You can use a valid form of ID such as a passport, ID card or driving licence. Our payment provider Online Payment Platform (OPP) is licensed to accept ID documents and provide payment services in the following countries:
UK, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Making and receiving payments FAQs
How long do payments take to process?
In most cases the seller will receive the money within a couple of minutes, however, in some cases the transfer can take up to XX hours. The length of time it takes to process payments depends on your bank.
Remember: As with all transactions on Gumtree, you should only transfer money after seeing an item – in this case the car you are purchasing – and confirming that you are completely satisfied with it. This will allow you to ensure that the car is as described and is the best way to avoid any future issues.
